Seattle Aquarium

Had a blast connecting with an old friend from Columbia and checking out all the Seattle Aquarium has to offer.
Baby J was enjoying the pier.
An attempt at a pic of the four of us. A rarity for sure. Lakin was irritated that we pulled her from important things like collecting rocks and checking out a homeless man's forgotten toiletries.
Baby J just getting cozy.
The kids loved the touch section of the aquarium. We spent a good portion of our time watching the tide roll into the pool and splashing star fish.
The glass was the perfect height for Ben.

Playing a little Orca trivia.

Lunch at Pike's Place Chowder. Oh. My. Goodness. Lakin was in heaven. Great cap to a wonderful morning.
Lakin and Riley hugging it out in the market.
The double has been a lifesaver when we need to book it and there's a crowd. Ben loves the front seat. Lakin has a love/hate relationship with the back seat.

Tonight we visit Golden Gardens for a beach bonfire.

Lakin Says...

Yesterday was Lakin's early childhood screening with the school district. It's state mandated that all children be screened before starting kindergarten in Minnesota  and three is the age they prefer for parents to have their child screened.

I was in the room with her, observing from the corner. It was so cute to watch her play the games with the test facilitator. She was so sweet and polite and very enthusiastic about each new task she was asked to do.

At one point she had to draw two intersecting lines. When she realized what she had drawn on her paper she exclaimed, "That's a cross. You know that is what God died on."  The whole office of facilitators had a good chuckle.

Later she was shown different objects and was asked to tell the facilitator about them. They were looking for the object name, color, and what it does. One item was a button. Lakin perked up and said, "That is a button and it sticks to snowmen."  That's a true Minnesota kid for you.

I love that girl.

She wore herself out and fell asleep on the way to lunch.

Bennett Brand: 11 Months

Baby boy, you are growing so big!

You were almost impossible to photograph this month because you never. stop. moving.  You are all over the house, fearlessly climbing and exploring.  I have never known a baby this curious - and you're sister was into lots of stuff at your age!  You keep me on my toes with your clever ways of getting around my makeshift physical boundaries.

Right now you are quite taken with these little wooden cars we snatched up at our most recent ikea trip.  They have a tiny squeak when their wheels turn so I can hear you driving them around the house while I do dishes at the sink or prepare lunches for the day.  That squeak always brings a smile to my face.

Your messy hair has yet to be cut but I can't decide if I'm ready for that milestone.  One time I tried to trim your hair like I do for your daddy and you let me quickly know that we would need the skills of a trained professional to make sure the job was done well and safely.

Changing your diaper is a straight chore.  You wiggle out of my grasp and escape my clutches, making me chase after your naked little behind as your sister laughs at the spectacle.   Pants.  You hate them.  I make you wear them when we leave the house and you make it known how displeased you are about the whole thing.  But when you wear tiny jeans or little man pants I just about die from the cuteness.

You are babbling a ton.  Nothing real discernable but I'm learning what your different noises and grunts mean.  "Nay, nay, nay, nay...." is usually uttered when you're ready for your next meal.  "Maaaaaamamamamamamam" when you need some extra cuddles.  "Dadadadadada" is your content little song when your world is perfect and you couldn't be happier.

We are preparing to celebrate your first birthday soon!  I love planning your party and thinking about all the things you will learn and do before that date.  I'm still dealing with the fact that the baby I just brought home from the hospital will be one.  But I suppose that is something all mothers struggle to grasp.

You make us laugh and warm our hearts.  We love watching you change and learn.  You are the sweetest little boy.

conversations with lakin

As I am giving Ben his morning bottle, rocking him in the darkness of his room, Lakin comes in and lays her head on the arm of the rocker.  She knows to whisper when Bennett's falling asleep.

Lakin: (with a whisper) Is there going to be a castle at the castle park?

Me: Yes.

Lakin: Can I be a princess and can Annie be a princess too?

Me: Sure

Lakin (with a worried expression)  Who's going to be the dragon?

Me: How about Ben?

Lakin: But he doesn't roar.

Me: Can I be the dragon?

Lakin: Yeah, that'll work.

Then she quietly slipped out of the room.

Important matters on her mind.  Don't want to forget these precious moments with her.
